As well as the DIY kits, templates, pattern packs and standard made to order items, sometimes I choose to take on some bespoke work.
This time, we have a custom leather watch strap to be paired with a custom 1 of 1 watch face. Our customer supplied the leather for this creation, he had been able to secure himself some of the original leathers that were salvaged from the Metta Catharina, which sank off Plymouth Sound in 1786. The leather on board was Reindeer leather that had been tanned in Russia. At the time, this leather was highly sought after, and the tanning secrets were kept under lock and key. It has been said that spies were sent to try and find out the trade secrets, but to no success.
While there are some replica leather available, being one of a few people who have been able to work with the original is a great honour, and the customer was thrilled with the strap that we made up for him.
